A Consumer Success Story

Doug* came to the Transitions' group home at 2015 Chestnut from Lincoln State School in 1986.  When he came to the Developmental Training Program (DTP) and the group home he had difficulty accepting the structure of the residential and day programs.  When he could not do as he pleased, Doug was prone to temper outbursts, consisting of verbal threats and at times, physical aggression.  There were many times we questioned whether Doug could succeed in the community, where there were greater levels of freedom, but also rules and necessary structure to protect him and those who lived with him.

Today, Doug continues to reside at the group home.  While his progress has been slow, it has been consistent. Staff learned that when Doug was encouraged to participate in his habilitation plan and was allowed to make decisions for himself, he was more in control of his behavior.  Thus, his participation in decision making was encouraged by staff.  Doug recently was seen by his physician.  The physician commented on how much Doug had matured over the past nine years.  He noticed that Doug was much more relaxed and more in control of his temper.  We are pleased that the group home and DTP have been able to help Doug ... and we anticipate that Quincy will remain his home.

*This is an actual story of a Transitions' consumer.  However, the name has been changed to protect the consumer's identity.
